About Our Class
Weekly Spelling ListsThe children will receive their first spelling list of 20 words by the end of September. They are taught their words every Monday and have a spelling test every Friday. We begin the year with a Phonics review to get us ready for great spelling success. You will be able to find the lists posted under homework on Mrs. Klaue’s blog to be able to practice each night.

Reading ProgramThe children will have the opportunity to read lots of books and earn a classroom Pizza Party . I will be sending a pink HOME READING LOG for students to fill out and bring back to school. The students read a minimum of 20 minutes per block and have the block initialed by a parent. A maximum of three blocks may be filled out each day. When a sheet is completely filled out it can be brought back into the classroom to be recorded on our goal chart. The students also may start collecting reward charms every time they bring in a sheet.

"What Excites Me" Presentations
The children will each be given a week when they have the opportunity to share something that they are experts in, something that they are excited about, or something they really want to spend some time researching. The sky’s the limit! Tell us about your favourite novel or movie or video game. Explain to us about your sport or instrument and give us a demo. Do some research on a topic of interest and tell us all about it. On their assigned Monday morning, students will bring in their prepared presentation. Please be sure that your child has practiced presenting at home so that he or she is able to present in a clear and informative way. Students will have about 10 minutes to present including comments or questions. Creative presentations are encouraged. Posters, power points, pictures, a book to be shared under the document camera, physical objects, or whatever will help to make your presentation better.
Homework Expectations
I RARELY ASSIGN “AT-HOME” ASSIGNMENTS. However, the children can be expected to have approximately 30 minutes of catch-up or practice a night. This could include math review, reading practice, spelling word review, and/or any other incomplete work from the school day. If your child is struggling with any expectations, please be sure to see me after school so we can see how to make things better for him or her. My goal is to help each child reach his or her potential!

Roving Reporter
Regularly, a student in our classroom will be assigned to be the Roving Reporter. His or her job is to write a short article about what took place in class that day. Using a computer at home or one of the school's laptops, students type their articles and turn them in to Mrs. Klaue via Google Drive, e-mail, or flash drive. This way, students get an opportunity to write using technology and Mrs. Klaue can easily upload the articles to The Student Blog. This web page will be updated often, so be sure to check in to read about life in our Grade 4 class!
Before writing, each student will be sure to take notes during the day, recording everything that happens and what is learned. Reading other blogs that are already posted on Mrs. Klaue’s blog will be helpful.

What if my child is away?
If your child is away for any reason, he or she is still responsible for what has been taught at school. Any work or handouts during the day will be left on a child’s desk to be picked up for completion and catch up at home. Modifications are made when necessary to make catch up less overwhelming. J If you know your child will be away ahead of time, let me know and I will do what I can to send some work along for the trip.
How can I help?
Ask your child about the day and what he or she is learning. Be specific. Go over assignments that come home and see where your child might need to do some extra work with you at home. For example, timed speed drills may not be complete, allowing for extra practice at home to build quick fact recall. Help your child to correct mistakes as a learning experience. Encourage your child to read each day and record the time on the Reading Log. Encourage curiosity. Study for Spelling tests and Unit tests together. Volunteer on a parent committee. Make sure your child gets enough sleep and has healthy brain food.
